3* The Lion Hotel Criccieth - Bodnant Gardens, Plas Newydd Gardens, West Highland Railway trip, Ffestiniog Railway trip

Monday 8 July

Departing home we make our way West to our hotel in Criccieth with a lunch stop on route. Owned and loved for over thirty years by 3 generations of the Brown/Burnett family, the Lion Hotel is famous for it’s welcoming atmosphere. With stunning views of mountains, coast and castle The Lion hotel offers the perfect retreat for all ages.

Tuesday 9 July

We begin our Welsh exploration by boarding the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Relax and enjoy the stunning scenery of Snowdonia in comfort, travel past outstanding scenery of glorious coastlines, ancient oak woodlands, mountains, rivers and castles as you embark on your journey on the award winning railway. This afternoon we will visit Bodnant Gardens, a world-famous garden home to National Collections and Champion Trees. With intimate corners, sweeping lawns, grand terraces and verdant woodland, there are many gardens in one at Bodnant. Created over 150 years, with plants collected and brought to Britain from far afield, and the incredible vision of generations of the McLaren family and their head gardeners The Puddles, this haven of rarity and beauty with a stunning backdrop of the Carneddau mountains of Snowdonia is a delight for the senses.

Wednesday 10 July

After a leisurely breakfast in the hotel we will make our way to Anglesey to visit Plas Newydd Gardens. Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned in the 18th century. A military museum contains relics from the First Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. Explore the spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, an italianate-style summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas. Relax back at the hotel late afternoon before dinner in the evening.

Thursday 11 July

Today we will enjoy the morning in Caernarfon. Explore Wales’ most famous castle, visit the Segontium Roman Fort ruins or wander along he quaint streets and shops. This afternoon we will board the Welsh Highland Railway for our second leg of our Welsh tour. From the Castle at Caernarfon the train winds round tight bends – through woods and alongside rivers racing down to the sea – along a route which is impassable for all but a narrow- gauge train.

Friday 12 July

After breakfast we will begin our journey home, arriving back late afternoon.
