Teapots and Windmills inc Lunch

Teapots and Windmills inc Lunch

A fascinating day exploring the Kent countryside visiting Teapot Island and Union Mill including a two course lunch with tea and coffee.

Teapots and Windmills

Teapot Island

Enjoy morning coffee at Teapot Island in the attractive village of Yalding. Teapot Island is home to a collection of teapots in excess of 7,000! Yalding has many interesting old buildings and the longest surviving medieval bridge in Kent at 450 feet long. Built in the 15th century, the stone bridge has seven arches and spans and during the Civil War in 1643, a battle took place there between the Roundheads and Cavaliers.

Break for lunch at the Mercure Maidstone Hotel.

Union Mill and the village of Cranbrook

After lunch, your tour continues with a drive through some of Kent’s most beautiful scenery towards your final stop of the day. Standing at the highest point overlooking the historic Wealden town of Cranbrook and maintained in working order, this Grade 1 Listed Building is the tallest surviving “smock mill” in the British Isles. Originally the mill had common sweeps with canvas to catch the wind and the cap was turned manually by a chain and Y-wheel. However, in 1840 the Russells decided to modernise the mill. They employed the millwrights Medhurst of Lewes to fit a new iron windshaft and gearwork, as well as the new style Cubitt’s patent sweeps.

Please  that the windmill is composed of 5 floors, all accessible by steep stairs.  If you choose not to go into the windmill there is a small room showing a video on the ground floor.
